Seascape and Art

Seaham Seascape

Seaham Beach

Another fleeting visit back home, I mean where I grew up in Durham. A short break, and a nice break in the weather too.

Seaham Beach in Clear Water

Seaham Beach

Seaham is on the East Durham coast and three miles south of Sunderland and it was heavily industrialised having a huge history in bottle making and coal mining. The industry has now gone, and the beaches that were blackened are clean and now combed for glass. Seaham glass is very popular with jewellery makers.

Eleven o One

Seaham is also home to Eleven o One, to whom everyone calls Tommy. A war hero one minute after Armistice 11am on 11th November 1918.

The shattered man contemplating what has come to pass, the end of a brutal war to which there is nothing to rejoice.

This sculpture was the creation of Ray Lonsdale, who was born in South Hetton, not to far from Seaham.

Thank you for calling in to my blog 🙂
